CH 3 – “Log” – Shingan no Yuusha

(TL Note: After reading this chapter you’ll never look at a tree the same way again.)

[I was fighting with logs as a weapon, just like one of my favorite “manga”…huh.] Makoto

But in those manga the enemies whom the hero was fighting were not zombies but vampires or demons.

To be honest, I was scared and close to falling into a state of confusion. That’s why I thought to take a log as a weapon. If it was calm at this time, I would not have decided to use a log as a weapon.

A log is too heavy, they are as big as a person’s torso, and there is no way for an ordinary people to swing as weapons … I am sure I thought so.

I probably would have guessed immediately that there was no way I could not lift something as big and heavy as a log, and given up using it as a weapon.

However, I was really confused at this time.

I could not think calmly, and so I grabbed a log.

And…I was able to pick up the log. Furthermore, I was able to swing the log, although I was all over the place.

Despite the log being over 2 meters long, and heavier than me.

I heard somewhere that Japanese swords and Western swords weigh only a few kilos. Even so, I was able to wield a log as weapon even though it’s dozens of kilos in weight.

Is it because my stats like “power” is twice that of the general populous in this world?

Or maybe it fight-or-flight response.

But anyway, in order to try to drive away the encroaching zombies, I swung the log with all I had. It kept swinging it desperately.

The log that I waved around hit one zombies.

It was mostly coincidental, but I smashed the side of zombie’s head…defeated it in one blow. More than half of the head was crushed and the most of the brains scattered. The zombies continue to convulse as it fell to the ground.

It does seem…like it will get back up.

Perhaps…I can get out of this?

… Just how long did I swing the log?

I was out of breath and even standing was hard. I do not have any more stamina left to keep swinging.

I supported my body with the log that I had stabbed into the ground and my shoulders where heaving because I was out of breath.

But…I was able to annihilate all of the zombies.

Around me, at least 50+ zombies were sprawled around. Almost all of the zombies had their heads crushed. Half of them were completely immobilized, and the other half were convulsing.

[Hmm? Among the convulsing zombies, there is a strange zombie woman.] Makoto

Unlike the other zombies who wore commoner’s clothes, it was wearing clothes you would expect an aristocrat from medieval Europe to wear.

Although it’s limbs are thin, for some reason it’s stomach was strangely inflated.

[Did it…just finished eating something?] Makoto

I do not want to think much about what this zombie woman ate.

But compared to the other zombies, the damage to the woman zombie’s head damage is relatively shallow.

However, even if it is left unattended, it will sooner or later perish. As I came to this conclusion, I left the woman zombie on its death bed. The expression “on its death bed” when used on a zombie seems a bit strange.

[I should come back and finish off the other zombies, including this zombie woman, after I walk around the town, I should pierce… Right now, it is too troublesome.] Makoto

Even if the zombies got up, I can easily beat them.

Anyway, the fear I had of the zombies has mostly faded.

No, I’m still scared of them.

I feel that it is physiologically horrendous. However, the zombies as monsters are not that strong after fight them.

First of all, their movements are very slow. And as more defensive maneuvers, for example protecting the head from a log, the was little defensive behavior either. They did not have intelligence, they just followed the instinct of a zombie, and just slowly approached me in order to bite me.

Their movements were too slow and monotonous and I honestly felt they were “weak”.

I am an absolute amateur in regards to fighting. Even when it comes to fighting another human I would be rather weak. But even I could destroy dozens of zombies.

Perhaps in this parallel world, zombies are the grunts you would find near the bottom of the list of monsters in this world.

[Even their status had “Level 1” written there.] Makoto

As long as I don’t lose myself to fear and my body can move, then they are an enemy I can do something about.

I also thought that I got “a powerful weapon with excellent reach and destructive power known as a log”, which is why this time I was able to unbeatable against the zombies.

Fighting bare-handed, it would not have turned out like this.

No, although it is a grunt monster, there were a large number of zombies. Even if I fought with a knife, a wooden sword, a bat or the like, I would have been buried and crushed by the zombies, unable to overcome their strength of numbers.

I have survived because the log has reach it has the power to defeat zombies with a single blow.

If there happened to have been a sword or spear lying there, I think that I still would have been killed by the zombies.

In the first place, if I picked up a sword that I never used before, I am skeptical if I could even use it as a weapon.

It is only natural that I, an ordinary high school student (on top of being not attending school), who has not learned swordsmanship or spear techniques has never held a Japanese sword or anything the like. Besides, I’m clumsy and my motor skills are non-existent. If someone like me grabs a sword with a blade, I won’t be able to use it properly.

If an amateur holds a real sword without proper training, and cannot properly handle the sword, they can cut their own hands and feet with the tip of the sword… I have heard such a story before.

Especially, I, who is always distracted, panicking, and confused constantly, don’t think I will be able to properly use a sword.

Also, in the case of a sword, I feel that after cutting down several zombies the sword won’t be able to cut anymore, or possibly the sword would be broken after having an amateur swing it around aimlessly.

Even if a spear, which I have never practiced with before, was lying there, I think that I could not properly handle it as a weapon. Besides, if you swing a spear aimlessly or thrust it recklessly, even if you defeat a few zombies; in the case of a spear, I feel that the handle will break in the middle of the fight.

A long, heavy, and powerful “log’” was sufficiently useful as a weapon just swinging it recklessly. A thick log, just like human torso, defeated 50 zombies without breaking.

If there were no logs in that place…just the thought gives me chills.

Picking up the log there, I was truly fortunate.

After a while, I started breathing normally.

I wasn’t sure if I should keep exploring the town.

If I was to tell the truth I just want to leave this town right now. Because there might be zombies still be lurking somewhere in the town.

Even in zombies are not that strong, I do not know what will happen if I caught in a surprise attack by a group of them.

[But … the people who are possibly alive in this town are perhaps, five people.] Makoto

In the information of the town I “saw” with the <God’s Eye> there were five inhabitants. If possible, I’d like to find them and protect it. I want to escape from this town together.

I had become somewhat confident and full of myself because I defeated dozens of zombies on my own.

In the end, I decide to continue exploring the town.

Even if a zombie comes out again, I will manage somehow.

[… As long as I have this log.] Makoto

I started to realize that if I learn how to use a log properly, it can be quite an effective weapon.

Speaking of which, how is my “status” now?

After defeating so many zombies. As with computer games, my level or something could have gone up and my stats might have risen. I expectantly check my status.

Name: Makoto Maruta

Race: Human

Age: 17 years old

Strength: 22 Dexterity: 16 Agility: 18 Intelligence: 20 Vitality: 21 Mind: 17 Magic: 22

Job: Barbarian Level 1

Skill: God’s Eye

Acquired Magic: None

Soul Rank: 5

Oh, it has gone up. “strength” increased from 20 to 22, “vitality increased from 20 to 21, “Mind” rose from 16 to 17 respectively. Also, my “soul rank” or whatever went up from 1 to 5. The moment I thought about the soul rank as something suspicion “The radiance of the soul, expressing the strength of the hero. And depending on the “experience” will increase its radiance.”, this information appeared in my head.

That soul rank went up to 4 in one go, and my basic stats, such as strength and so on, increased by 4 in total. As my soul rank rose by 1, basic stats also increased by 1 point. I wonder if it will increase?

Is the basic stat that increase chosen at random? Or perhaps my actions have some sort of influence on it?

Somehow, I feel like it’s the latter.

I swung around the hefty weapon (log) until I almost ran out of stamina and defeated all of the zombies. It also explains why “strength” and “vitality” are rising, and not “dexterity” or “intelligence”.

“Mind” has also gone up, because I continued fighting against horrible zombies as my opponent. My fragile spirit might have been trained to some extent.

By the way, “job” has turned into “barbarian”, huh.

Until fighting the zombies, the job was “no job”.

I do not want to remain unemployed, but barbarian is a bit much.
(TL Note: I’m not sure if this is a shout out to Mushoku Tensei or not)

I don’t want to be thought of as some savage from a undeveloped area, it’s kind of upsetting.

Well, without a sword or a spear, the sight of me frantically swinging a log and fighting, I probably looked like a barbarian warrior.

But whatever, if the job was hero, that would have been nice…

CH 2 – “Zombie” – Shingan no Yuusha

…After walking for 7 to 8 hours, I finally saw a town.
Night had fallen, and the surroundings have become quite dark. In the night sky, many stars and the 2 moons were shining.
…After walking for such a long time, I am not even that tired. Even after walking this much, my legs haven’t cramped.
Even though I do not have confidence that my strength and stamina are superior to normal people, however, after walking for this distance and time I am hardly tired.
Perhaps, in this parallel world, because of my stats my “vitality” is quite high. I wonder?
Even though the standard seems to be 10, my “vitality” is double that at 20.
In this parallel world, physically speaking, I may be really amazing.

The town seems to be surrounded by a wooden fence taller than me. Is it a fence to prevent wild animals or thieves from entering? Perhaps, it may be to prevent monsters from attacking.
Speaking of which, if there are herds of pegasus in this world, then it does not seem strange if there are monsters that attack people as well.
I have not encountered even one monster so far. Well, it may be because I have been walking on a safe road that humans frequently use, a well traversed road. On such a road, the encounter rate for a monster is probably also low. Maybe.
…By the way, what was the name of this town?
(Town of Rua The Holy Garp Empire Population: 5 Main Resources: Lumber)
When I was looking into the town over the fence, a translucent frame with this information came floating into view.
This is also the power the <God’s Eye>. If you can easily learn the information you want to know, this power is quite convenient. The <God’s Eye> is quite the useful skill.
But is the Holy Garp Empire the name of the country that this town is in?
I think that the place I am now is also within the territory of the Holy Garp Empire.
That is good and all, but isn’t the town’s population being only five people a bit too low? In the Middle Ages, there seems to have been many cases where the villages and small towns in Europe had a population of a little under 100 people. But no matter how you think about it, 5 people is too low for a town like this.
I wonder if something happened in the town?
No…perhaps a large number of residents relocated, and now only the remaining residents are few in number, but that is what I think. That is what I hope happened.
While worrying what will happen next, I entered the already open gate and proceeded into town.
The <God’s Eye> appears to have a night vision effect, so even in a town in the middle of the night with no lights, I could see to some extent.
There seems to be many brick buildings similar to the ones from the Middle Ages in this town. Even though it’s the middle of the night, there was only silence to be heard. The town had a somewhat sad atmosphere.
I wonder in which house are the 5 townsfolk living in.

[Among the dozens of buildings, which one are they living in?] Makoto
While muttering to himself, a habit of mine, I look for a house with lights on. As I make my way through the town that is paved with cobblestones, on the way, I found a mountain of wood (logs) piled up high.
[Logs… speaking of that…there was a manga where people fought vampires using logs as a weapon.] Makoto
I whispered this while looking at the mountain of logs.
By the way, since I love that manga, as I looked at the logs I found myself reminiscing.
In addition, according to the information I saw with the <God’s Eye>, I remember that the specialty of this town is lumber.
From the mountains behind the town, someone must be cutting the trees down. I wonder if out of five of the residents that are remaining in this town, if at least one person here is a woodcutter?
In any case, it would be nice if they are a kind person. I hope they are nice enough to feed a person they don’t know and let that stranger stay with them in their house. Well, there are so many empty houses in this abandoned village, so I should be able to find a place to stay. But even if it’s an empty house, is it ok for me to just stay there without permission? Well let’s put this aside

Walking around the town for a while, I found a square. It is a square with a small fountain. Near the fountain … someone is standing there. Even though the person’s back is turned, it’s probably a woman standing there.

[I finally found someone.] Makoto
I feel relieved as I approached the woman.
[A,Ah…excuse me.] Makoto

As to not alarm the woman, I approached her while calling out in as gentle of a voice as possible. Since I have a communication phobia, I am really not good at this.
The woman turned around, !!!
Makoto’s heart almost stopped.
The woman’s face … was rotting. There were several maggots squirming in her face and her right eyeball was hanging out of the eye socket. It looked like it would fall off at any moment.
There was a big laceration on her head and from there … her brains were protruding out….
Besides, as I approached her, I noticed the woman smelled like rotting meat.
The woman was… just like a “zombie”. She looked like a “zombie” that appear in zombie movies, which are also called the living dead.
W,Who are you?
As I thought this so, I could see a translucent frame in front of me.

Zombie (minor zombie)
Weakness: Sunlight, Salt (especially purified salt), All holy attribute attack magic

This was written in the frame
This woman is…a zombie?

If this is a parallel world where there are monsters, even if there are zombies, the poster boy of famous monsters, it isn’t such a surprising discovery, but…

[Aaaaaaaaa, u, uuuu … ah …] Zombie

The woman, no zombie, let out a groan that you cannot think came from a human and began to approach me.
I instinctively felt I was in danger.
At this rate, I…may be killed…by this zombie woman. My heart was screaming.
I couldn’t stop my legs from shaking.
I fell into a panic as I bent down and picked up a palm-sized stone. And to the slowly, but surely approaching zombie, I threw the stone with all my might at the zombie’s rotting face. The stone had more force behind it than I thought.
Even though I had no confidence in my control, since the target was close, I hit it right on the mark. On top of that, I hit the zombie in its remaining left eye.
Because of the stone throw damage, the zombie crumpled right there on the spot.
[For now, “Command: Escape”!] Makoto
I ran away from the plaza in a panic. And I didn’t have a single thought of going close to the zombie and finishing it off. The zombie was so scary there was no way I was going to go near it.

I felt like I ran quite a distance.
I realized I ran all the way back to a place where there was a mountain of logs stacked. In order to catch my breath, I decided to sit on one of the logs and grasp the situation at hand.
[Who would have thought…that zombies…are real.] Makoto
In this parallel world, zombies are just a type of monster?
Besides that, … why are zombies wandering through the town… What happened to this town?
Suddenly, an image appeared in the back of my mind. A bad quality black and white image.
A black and white movie, like a classic movie from a long time ago, was fast forwarding in my mind.

In the middle of the night, several zombies crawled out of the graves in the community cemetery of the town.
Several of the inhabitants were attacked by the zombies as they slept.
And some of the humans who were bitten by zombies, became zombies and attacked the people of the town one after another.
After one night… the town was overflowing with zombies.

It was just like scene out of a classic zombie movie.
W,What is this? I guess…this is also the power of the <God’s Eye>?
I feel like Goddess Liana said that you can also “see” the past with the <God’s Eye>.
So, what just played in my brain, is what actually happened to this town in the past?
The tragedy that occurred in this town in the past…

[Ahh?] Makoto

I suddenly cried out.
The doors to dozens of houses opened at once, and a lot of zombie-like dead bodies came out. From the houses that I thought were empty, the living dead shuffled out.

[W,What the hell is going on] Makoto

…This is not funny…
My face stiffens up. Looking with the <God’s Eye> everyone here is really a zombie. I…was surrounded… by dozens of zombies.

[I’m so scared I might piss myself…hahaha…] Makoto

At this rate, I will be attacked by dozens of zombies. And I’ll be eaten alive. Or, I may be bitten and turned into the very same zombie that attacked me.
[…To hell with this!] Makoto
I almost gave up right there, but I was somehow able to snap myself back into reality.
I have to run away…no, it is impossible now. I’ve been completely surrounded.

[Then… I have to defeat them? Something like that…it’s impossible for me…I don’t even have a weapon.] Makoto

There are a few small stones scattered around, but with just stones, there is no way I can take on dozens of zombies.
While I am hit a few zombies with stones, I will definitely be bitten by the other zombies.
If only…If only I had a proper weapon, if there was a weapon with a long reach.
At that moment, my eyes fell upon the mountain of logs.

CH 1 – “Goddess Liana” – Shingan no Yuusha

(TL Note: The MC questions himself A LOT and there are a lot of sentences that repeat themselves. So, I am trying to add to it, so the text makes sense without changing the meaning. Also, this chapter was a pain. But what’s new.)

There are two moons.
There is a horse with wings flying in the sky, is that what you would call a Pegasus?
So, this is truly…a parallel world.

The next time I awoke, the evening sun that was burning in the sky had flew into my sight. In the dusk sky, you could see the thin outlines of the two moons and a herd of Pegasus flying in the sky.
It seems I am laying down in some unknown field of a parallel world.
Was I thrown in this field by that selfish goddess, Astena?
I pinched my cheek……yeah, it hurts.
If I feel pain, then—-t,then this isn’t a dream?
As I started to realize this is real, I started to panic. I don’t know what to do now. I’m so nervous I can’t stand it. Even if I wait around I doubt the situation will improve. That’s why I decided to travel until I reach a place with people.
Luckily, there was a road nearby. If I follow this road, I might reach a village or town.
In the meantime, I decided to walk in the direction of the setting sun.
—-After walking for 30 minutes, there was someone crouching down on the side of the road.
It was an old woman. On top of that she looked very dirty. After looking closely, she has her eyes closed. I doubt if she is sleeping.
I was confused if I should call out to her or not.
I do want to ask her if I keep going on this road will I reach a town with people in it?
But for a guy like myself who has communication phobia finds it difficult to talk to someone I don’t know.
Also, this is a parallel world. There is the worry of “not knowing the language”.
But, before I could decide whether or not to call out to her, the old woman called out to me first.

[Hello…the person over there.] Old woman

I stopped several steps away from the old woman. She still had her eyes closed. Is it possible, that her eyes are bad?

[Since you are walking, would you happen to be a traveler? Could you find it in your heart to spare some food for this poor blind old woman…I haven’t eaten for 2 days. I’m so hungry I feel like I’m going to die.] Old woman

The old woman begged for food from me in a voice that invites pity.
Food…huh. I check the pockets of the track suit that I’m wearing. I found the box of calorie mate I had planned on eating later. It’s the type that has 4 pieces in one box. (TL Note: calorie mate is this weird meal replacement biscuit in japan. Imagine a dry, crumby cookie in a stick shape. It has a weird taste, but it’s not bad.)
Is it a good idea to give this blind old woman my calorie mate?
I’m in a situation where I don’t know how long it will take to walk to a town or a village? Should I give a complete stranger my precious food supply……?
I’m at a lost as to what to do.
I was hesitant…but in the end, I gave her half of the box.
Since she told me she hasn’t eaten anything in 2 days, as a person, I can’t just ignore this woman.
By the way, my nose is stuffy, and I can barely smell. But even with all of that, I could the smell the foul odor coming off the old woman as I handed her the calorie mate.

[Hmm, this is such delicious food. Thank you so much.] Old woman

The old woman showed her thanks as she ate the calorie mate I gave her.
Being thanked after doing a good deed isn’t a bad feeling at all.

[Uhm, Ma’am. I want to go to the nearest village or town. Will I reach a town if I keep going this way on this road?] Makoto

[Yes, if you walk for half a day you will reach a small town called Rua.] Old woman

I was depressed when I heard I would still have to walk for a half a day.
It might be better to be more positive now that I know there is a town here.
But sadly, I am not a very positive person.

[Thank you for giving me directions. Well then, I will be on my way.] Makoto

I gave the old woman my regards and went to leave.

[Can you please wait a moment?] Old woman

As the old woman called out, I turned around.

[Actually, I was heading to Rua myself. While I was traveling I injured my legs and I couldn’t move. While I was panicking, the sun had already set……I am truly, truly sorry for this, but could you please find it in your heart to carry me to town?] Old woman

The old woman asked me in a depending tone.
……What should I do?
The old woman looks light, but carrying someone om my back for half a day would be tough.
Also, and I know this is bad of me to say, but the old woman looks so filthy. Carrying this old woman while walking a half a day is just…

[Please. I will die here in the wild. Please I beg for mercy. I beg you. I beg you.] Old woman

In the end, I couldn’t abandon the old woman, so I carried her. If I abandoned her and if she really dies, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.
I walked for 30 minutes while carrying the old woman.

[Thank you so much… You are a real lifesaver.] Old woman

The old woman was grateful as she thanked me again and again.
As I carried her, I also spoke to her.

[Ho ho, you were summoned from a place called earth by the Goddess Astena, huh. But, she deemed you to be useless and threw you into a field… Honestly, what a horrible person.] Old woman

As I told the old woman what happened, she immediately believed me.
According to the old woman’s story, in this world there are “Goddesses” as well as beings called “Gods”. They regularly show themselves in front of people.
It seems the Gods are existences that have superior powers over humans. But they seem to act arrogant, careless, and make mistakes. There seem to be some gods who enjoy competing over who has the most influence. There are many gods who love having authority and gods who love to have physical relations with humans.
They are gods that act just as humans, just like the Grecian Gods.
The Goddess Astena also has a personality that is as prideful and selfish as a bad person.
Shit. Just remembering that woman, has me upset again.
…Someday, I will pay her back for what she has done.

[Honestly, that goddess is rotten to the core. Although she has many believers and has a large amount of “power”, what a nasty woman.] Old woman

[……] Makoto

[It is true that bitch goddess is summoning humans from another world to be her disciples. Then if she summons a human who isn’t that worthwhile, she uses “teleportation” magic to throw them in some random place, just as she did to you.] Old woman

[……] Makoto

[That fucking bitch of a goddess is the worst…] Old woman

The old woman I am carrying on my back continues to curse the Goddess Astena. It’s as if she has a personal grudge against her…… I don’t know why, but the old woman’s way of talking has started to change.

Her voice seems to have changed from the raspy voice of an old woman to a youthful voice.
The horrible body smell that almost made me vomit has disappeared. Now, if anything a rose-like aroma is tickling my nasal activity. What is going on?

[It’s fine. Please let me down.] Old woman

[Huh? O,Oh.] Makoto

As I kneeled to let the old woman down. After letting the old woman down, I turned my neck to look my behind me.
Then—-I was left speechless.
Because a beautiful young woman was standing there instead of an old woman. A beautiful girl with silver hair who looks like she is in her teens.
Her right and left eyes are silver and gold in color. In short, she has odd eyes.
Her feet are also floating several inches of the ground.
The clothes she is also wearing changed from the filthy gray hemp robe she had on to what you would expect a goddess from legends to wear, pure white silk without a single mark on it.

[I am the one that governs over the “Eyes of the Gods”. The Goddess Liana.] Liana

[……] Makoto

[I am called the <God’s Eye> Goddess Liana.] Liana

The beautiful young girl who as floating in mid-air introduced herself while smiling me.

[A vacancy has appeared among my followers and I was looking for a good person. I transformed into a filthy, ugly, pitiful old woman. Because to become my follower the first condition is to have the kindness to be considerate to others and a charitable heart.] Liana

Is this silver hair, odd eyed, beautiful girl the old woman from before…?
Is she also a……goddess? She is floating in mid-air and her atmosphere is very godly. Maybe…she really is a goddess?

[These past couple of days, among the humans traveling on this road, there were only a few people who spared food to the old woman. You are truly a nice person.] Liana

[A,Ah.] Makoto

[Also, you are the first person to carry me. You are truly a kind person.] Liana

The woman that introduced herself as the Goddess Liana smiled with a grin,

[You, the kind person who has been summoned from another world. As a goddess, I shall grant you power.] Liana

[G,Grant me power?] Makoto

Being praised for my good deeds and receiving “power” from a goddess. It reminds me of the developments in the tales of heroes from Greek legends or video games and manga.
To me, this is a good deal, but she might be up to something.
I have to make sure I’m not being fooled.

[Yes, a fraction of my power as a god.] Liana

[……] Makoto

[But, depending on whether you become my follower or not, there is a big difference in the “power” you will receive.] Liana

[……] Makoto

[First, in the case of you not becoming my follower—-you will be able to see things from very far away. And in a battle, I can make sure you can fully grasp the movements of your opponent.] Liana
[……And then including my kinetic vision, only my eyesight will improve, right?] Makoto

It doesn’t seem like that great of a skill, I’m losing my motivation.

[Well, that’s about it. Humans who don’t become my follower, are not granted a strong “power”.] Liana

[Then, if I do become what you call a follower, then?] Makoto

[If you do become a follower, you will be granted an even greater “power”. Even…the <God’s Eye>.] Liana

[<God’s Eye>?] Makoto

<God’s Eye>…eyes of a god…it sounds amazing.

[If you have the <God’s Eye> you can see your status as well as the status of others. It is also possible to see the events of the past and even future events, although it is random.] Liana

[T,That’s amazing.] Makoto

[So, will you become my follower?] Liana

[Even if you ask me right out of the blue like that. Just what exactly is…a follower?] Makoto

I am wary of it being slavery-like subordination.

[Among the Gods and Goddesses, there are many different conditions.] Liana

[……] Makoto

[By the way, I am of the belief that a god should not recklessly interfere in the fate of humans. That is why I do not put strict restrictions on my own followers. To live freely, and enjoy one’s fate is best.] Liana

[……] Makoto

[If you happen to do anything heroic, I would like for you to tell others that you are my follower.] Liana

Even if I become a follower or the like, it doesn’t seem like I will be forced to work.
And, there doesn’t seem to be any demerits…

[It seems you are at lost as to what to do. That’s fine, I have a suggestion.] Liana

The Goddess Liana showed one finger and,

[How about becoming a temporary follower for one month. During that time, I will lend you the power of the <God’s Eye>.] Liana

[Temporary?] Makoto

[Yes, a temporary follower. Even for me, choosing someone to be a follower solely on their personality is out of the question. This is also I can evaluate you with my “eyes”, ok.] Liana

Is it something like a trial period?
After thinking about it for a bit. I agreed to become a temporary follower. I am interested in the amazing power called <God’s Eye>. I also believe that the woman in front of me isn’t a bad person.

[Now please close your right eye.] Liana

The Goddess Liana asked me to close my eye, and I honestly followed her instructions.
With her beautiful hand, she softly touched my closed right eye.

[With this, your right eye now has the power of the <God’s Eye> within it. That’s right…to start with try strongly wishing to see your own status.] Liana

I did as I was told.

A half transparent frame appeared in front of me.
This is…a “status screen” or something of the like that you would normally see in computer games.
Inside of this frame my, Makoto Maruta, status info is,

Name: Makoto Maruta
Race: Human
Age: 17 years old
Strength: 20 Dexterity: 16 Agility: 16 Intelligence: 20 Vitality: 20 Mind: 20 Magic: 20
Job: No Job (Level 0)
Skill: God’s Eye
Acquired Magic: None
Soul Rank: 1

Even though my abilities have been quantified, I have no idea if this is good or bad.

[For normal humans, strength, dexterity, and magic are usually around 10. For someone with 20, your abilities are much more superior than a normal person’s.] Liana

The Goddess Liana told me about my status, as if she could read my hind.

[Going by the numbers, the average of my abilities is closer to 20 than 10….] Makoto

That’s strange.
I have no confidence in myself. I thought my skills would be below average. Even if my strength and Intelligence are at normal human standards, I am aware that I am a slow, bumbling person.
There is no way my abilities, status, are this high.

[Your base stats are quite something. Strength like yours only shows up in 1 in a 1000 people.] Liana

[Do I really have the strength that appears in 1 in a 1000 people? In my previous world, I was a human who was below average.] Makoto

[That fucking bitch of time and space Goddess Astena summons people who have higher stats than the people of this world. But it seems that whoever is someone from that parallel world is chosen at random.] Liana

A normal person from earth may have stats equal if not greater than mine. Then, if someone who is below average from earth like me, that person is considered excellent here.
……This is might be a good world after all.
This might be an amazing world for me.

[If you want details on the specifics of your stats, then just wish for it and you can discover some extra information about it.] Liana

Is it like a help function?

[So…. there are some things I must take care of, I need to return to heaven. I will make sure to check on how you are doing occasionally with my <God’s Eye> from heaven.] Liana

[Huh? Wait..please wait a moment.] Makoto

I called out and stopped the Goddess Liana as she was floating high and heading toward the heavens.

[Can you please use your power and send me back to my old world?] Makoto
On top of my stats being good, if it’s this world I may achieve a lot. This might be a world that’s perfect for me.
But still……I wanted to go back to earth.
Because earth is where my “family” is, that’s including my sister.
That’s why…

[I am sorry to say this, but I don’t have the “power” to send you back to your original world…. I’m sorry.] Liana

The Goddess Liana ascended to Heaven.
Since I was left by myself, I had no choice but to walk by myself and continue to the town I was told about.
But, why did all of this happen to me.
I, who lived a boring life, did wish to be summoned to another world as a hero. By performing heroic acts in another word, I wanted to be thought of as a necessary person by the people around me.
It is true that I imagined and wished to be summoned to another world.
But……my current situation is completely different from what I imagined.
I did not want to be deemed useless the moment I was summoned. I did not want to be looked down upon and be thrown away like an unwanted item.
I remember the cold stare the Goddess of time and space Astena gave me.
Those scornful eyes as if looking at garbage.

[……Dammit.] Makoto

I’m just becoming more and more depressed.
Besides the “Goddess of space and time Astena” who decided I was unnecessary. I met another goddess called the “God’s Eye Goddess Liana”.
And it seems I have received the special power <God’s Eye> from the Goddess Liana.
To receive a power from a god or goddess…I think this is amazing.
It just like the main character from a hero story.
This the hero story where I am the main star. Yeah, there is no doubt. I’m sure that’s right. Let’s just think that way.
Because…. if I don’t I won’t be able to stand it.
If I don’t think this way, I will be crushed by all of my own negative thoughts.
But, it seems that if I’m in this world then, my base abilities are quite good. Even though I’m very nervous I might be able to survive somehow. No, I will survive.

[Dying out here in the wild…no thanks.] Makoto

I have been summoned by a goddess to another world, so I should be a protagonist.
Because of that, I won’t die so easily. I am sure everything will be fine. As I was thinking on this, I somehow set forward with heavy steps and continued walking.
Because, if I didn’t think that way, I would break down right there in the middle of the road.

Shingan no Yuusha-Prologue 2

Several Days Later.

I was home today as well, not attending school. Today would be the same old boring day again, that is how I spent my day. But, an unexpected event happened.

As I was reading a manga in my room, suddenly a bright light appeared above my head. As I looked up to the ceiling, a magic circle with a geometric pattern design appeared above my head. I was speechless.
Then the next second my consciousness began to fade……and I sank into darkness.

When I awoke, I was in a building I’ve never seen before. This wide building’s floor, walls, and ceiling were all made of white marble. It looks like the inside of an ancient greek or roman temple that I saw in a movie a long time ago.

And to add to the surprises there was a shockingly beautiful woman in her 20’s who was standing in front of me. And she was wearing clothes that looked like the garments of a greek goddess. She is a true beauty with blond hair and azure eyes. She was just as beautiful as a goddess.

She was surrounded by something like an awe-inspiring majestic aura; it seemed godly.
And now that I am looking carefully, the woman in front of me is floating several centimeters off the ground.

—-Am I dreaming right now?

[……It seems, I have failed again.] Woman

As the beautiful woman looked down upon me, she said this in an unpleasant tone. She looked at me was if she was looking at something that bored her.

[W,Who are you? And what is this place?] Makoto

Even though I was flustered I was able to ask this question.

[I am the Goddess who rules over Time and Space, Astena. Also from your perspective this is a parallel world. The name of this word is Manastasia. I am the one that summoned you.] Astena

G,Goddess…parallel world…summon…? I must be dreaming. There is no mistake.

[In order to increase my influence, I intended to summon someone with the strength of a hero or at least someone who has the qualities to become a hero. …But once again I summoned a dud of a human.] Astena

The Goddess Astena said this while sighing and shaking her head.
Hasn’t she been insulting me for a while now?

[Your base stats are somewhat better than the original inhabitants of this world. But that’s it. If you don’t also have a special ability, then there is no way you would have military tactics. To say nothing of the fact that your soul’s glow is dull. There is no way you could become a hero or a great man of valor.] Astena

[………] Makoto

[Garbage like you is unnecessary. Not a chance.] Astena

Her last words stabbed me in my chest.
If I am called garbage then I can’t complain. But to be called unnecessary and not having a chance really shocked me.

[……Ok. If that is the case then please send me back to my world.] Makoto

I said this as while pouting.

[Sadly, I cannot grant your request.] Astena

[W,What?] Makoto

[Summoning someone from a parallel world expends a considerable amount of power, even for myself the Goddess of Time and Space. The power it takes to return someone to a parallel world is even greater. More importantly, I have no power to use for such garbage as yourself.] Astena

So, you summon me without my consent and now you won’t send me back home?

[T,That’s bullshi…] Makoto

[You are an eyesore. Away with you, garbage.] Astena

Before I could raise my voice in objection, the goddess Astena shook her hand.
In an instant, the scenery in front of me distorted. And my consciousness once again sunk into darkness.

Shingan no Yuusha-Prologue 1

My Former Daily Routine (The normal days on earth)

[—- A log craftsman’s mornings start early.]

This is what the Narrator was saying on a television program.
On a Sunday evening I was in my room laying around while the tv was on that program came on. It’s a documentary program that presents people involved in sports, theater, music, academics and etc.
This time they seem to be showcasing Nakamura Ichirou, a log craftsman.
I just finished reading a manga where someone killed a vampire with a log, so I am currently interested in log craftsmen. (TL Note: So, I think the author is referencing a manga called Higanjima. Where a dude kills vampires with logs. It’s kinda sick.)
I will actually pay attention to the program.

[Nakamura-san is a world-renowned polish log craftsman. He is a famous person who is a recipient of the Important Intangible Cultural Property award, also known as a Human National Treasure. Polishing log crafting uses Japanese cedar and Japanese cypress. When you remove the bark, and it’s polished you can use it for things like an alcove post.] Announcer (TL Host: Yeah this is an actual award in japan giving to people who are considered masters in a certain field. It like the English custom of knighthood, but less fancy and more to recognize abilities.)

Even though he was introduced as being world renowned, I have never heard of him before.
I didn’t even know there was such a job like a polisher log craftsman. I once accidentally found out about log craftsmen chair makers from the net a long time ago.

[Onii-chan, lend me some manga, ‘kay.] (TL Note: I will not be translating certain Japanese words because they are just so predominant that everyone knows them. Also, it loses something in the translation.)

My little sister Maruko opened my door and came inside my room.
Her full name is Maruta Mako and her nickname is Maruko, she is my little sister who is in elementary school. She is in the 5th grade and she love manga.

Her name Maruko comes from her roundish cute face.

[Today the newest volume of the manga that you buy came out today. It already arrived right. I’ve seen right~ through you.] Maruko

The manga I lent to her previously, she seems to be really into it.

[Ah, yeah. Here ya go.] Onii-chan

[Yay, thanks. Onii-chan is the best!] Maruko

Even though Maruko isn’t moving her head, her ponytail is swaying like a dog’s tail.

…What is going on with my sister’s hair? Is there a tail bone in there?

[Don’t only praise me when you are borrowing my stuff. Honestly…what a calculating sister I have.] Onii-chan

[Tee Hee.] Maruko

My sister Maruko stuck her tongue out as she said this.
And as she started laughing said.

[Since you lent me a manga, should I give you some “service”.] Maruko

This is what she said.
For being an elementary school student, she is coming off like a little devil.

[Service?] Onii-chan

As I threw her words back at her, Maruko put her lips right near my ear.

[Yep. You’re cute and adorable sister is going to present some service to you.] Maruko

This is what she whispered to me. And at the end she blew into my ear.
Honestly, a cold chill ran down my spine.

……Recently, my sister has been acting weird. What should I do?

The young girls manga magazine that Maruko reads has increased the number of works geared to older girls, this may be affecting her. She seems to be recently acting like a flirtatious girl.

For me, a virgin whose age also equals how long I haven’t had a girlfriend, I know my sister is only teasing and playing with me.

She probably thinks that since I’m her brother I would be the perfect person to practice these phrases on. The young girls manga magazine’s special “How to become a dangerously cute devilish girl” and other stuff like this.

[Onii-chan. Lay down on the bed.] Maruko

I listened to her invitation and laid on my stomach on the bed.

I had already guessed what my sister’s “service” actually is. It’s probably a massage or something.

Of course, it was a normal massage and nothing sexual, this goes without saying.
Maruko straddled my back.
She is light so it wasn’t uncomfortable.
By the way, when I looked at my reflection in the mirror in my room I could see my sister’s panties, but this meant nothing to me.
It was a stripped pattern, honestly such unnecessary information.
Well I was relieved that my sister is wearing child underwear befitting an elementary school student. If she happened to be wearing adult black panties then as her brother I would be shocked in many ways.

[Oh, my sir, you are so stiff.] Maruko

As my sister Maruko spouted random phrases she massaged my back.
Of course, Maruko had no skills and techniques for massaging me.
To be honest the massage didn’t even feel good, but the shaky massage that she put her all into for me was her form of “service” and I was satisfied with that.
After a couple of minutes my sister must have become bored with the massage, because she is now watching TV while randomly massaging my back.
She was half watching the documentary programing presenting the log craftsmen Nakamura-san when.

[Oh, that’s right, Onii-chan.] Maruko

[What?] Onii-chan

[Among my friends, there is a girl whose mother is a yoga instructor. That girl said you can also use logs in yoga.] Maruko

[O, Oh…] Onii-chan

The combination of the mystical like yoga with a log somewhat feels weird.

[It seems you lay on top of the log while doing yoga. It supposed to be good for relieving cricks
in your body, and it has a relaxation effect. It’s apparently called “Log Yoga” and it’s supposed to be pretty popular. Since you don’t do anything every day, if you are interested why don’t you try and take a lesson. They even have trial lessons.] Maruko

[Don’t just go and decide that I am free… even though I am.] Onii-chan

After several minutes passed Maruko’s hands had completely stopped showing she was fed up with doing the massage.
Besides that, she is still sitting on my back and trying to read the manga I just lent her.
……I think it’s about time to get off of me.
Just as he was about to complain, the ending theme song for the tv show they left on in the background started to play.

[Whenever I hear the ending theme song or this show I think that it is the end of Sunday…. hmm.] Maruko

10-year-old Maruko let out a weary sigh.
But for her to not feel this way over the national anime or The Sazae-san show but to feel this over this show’s passionate ending song. What a manly elementary school girl.
……But more importantly my sister. Can you please get of your brother’s back?

[But, Onii-chan is lucky.] Maruko

[What is it now?] Onii-chan

[Since you’re a neet, every day is Sunday.] Maruko

I, Maruta Makoto, am 17 years old a high school student, but currently I am not attending classes. I am a neet so everyday Sunday and a holiday to me.
My sister is still sitting on my back. She started swaying as if she was riding a mechanical bull and happily started singing.

[Everyday. Neet life. Makoto.] Maruko (TL Note: YEAH Persona 4!!)

[Don’t casually call me by my first name and dis me with some strange song.] Makoto (TL Note: Everyone probably knows this already but in Japanese you really don’t call people by the first names unless they are related to you and younger or are super close to that person. Everyone else uses a person’s last name. If it’s family then the staple Onii-chan or onee-san.)

I pretended to be mad and I did a push-up while lying down on the bed.
I tried to shake my sister of my back.
But, sadly Maruko has both great reflexes and motor skills so she quickly jumped down from my back.
On top of that my sister finished with a one liner “Hasta la vista” and she left my room.
…She has been getting pretty full of herself lately.
Well, she still is very cute. But the times she has been teasing me have been increasing. Even though I am so much older than her, she is looking down on her brother.
But the reason for me losing my respected place as the older brother is because I don’t go to school and I am somewhat of a shut in.

[Oh, but don’t worry, Onii-chan.] Maruko

Maruko who I had thought had left my room had stuck her head in gap of the open door.

[…. What?] Makoto

[For my poor Onii-chan who has no social skills, in the future if you become an absolutely useless person, since I have no choice I will support you. But, I will leave the chores to you, just like a wife.] Maruko

[Just who is a poor Onii-chan! Just who is an absolutely useless person!] Makoto

I pretended to throw the book that was next to me.

[Command: Escape] Maruko (TL Note: This one might be Dragon Quest.)

As Maruko laughed, this time she definitely ran back to her room.
……Honestly, what did she mean by supporting me. Ridiculous.
It is true that since I don’t attend class, my future is looking hopeless. But, I can’t even imagine being supported by her. My pride as her older brother won’t allow it. If it is not due to some illness, then an older brother must never be reliant on his little sister.
—-As I thought these things, a bit of me was looking forward to this. I am absolutely hopeless.
